BSL course 4

BSL Level 4 Certificate

This course is aimed at those who want to develop an advanced level of fluency in British Sign Language and focusses on the linguistics and fluency development in a wide range of situations. It is perfect for those who want to further develop their BSL skills, or for those who wish to work with Deaf people or already do so, such as Communication Support Workers (CSW’s), Social Workers of the Deaf, Trainee Interpreters, Teachers of the Deaf, Lecturers, etc., and for those wishing to progress to professional interpreter training.

Course Objectives

  • Fine tune proficient British Sign Language skills in a wide range of settings and to a professional level.
  • Develop further BSL linguistic and grammatical skills and knowledge, incorporating that into production skills.
  • Understand and use idiosyncratic, regional and inference signs.
  • Learn about interpreting.
  • This qualification has 3 units, which can be done separately. However, completion of all 3 units is required in order to achieve the full Level 4 BSL certificate.

Summary of Course

  • Signing Skills Development Using British Sign Language in conversations, discussions, debates and presentations at work and in social settings, including more complex / technical vocabulary.
  • Sign Linguistics Development; Learning extended sign language linguistics.
  • Professional Skills: Using appropriate register, idioms and conventions including non-verbal conventions. Introduction to interpreting.
  • Total number of hours including guided and independent study: 300 hours.

NOTE: To be able to register for this course, it is expected that the candidate has achieved BSL Level 3 previously. It would be beneficial at this level that you are either working, or regularly socialising (i.e. with family) within the Deaf Community and have ample opportunity to use your BSL skills.
