BSL course 1

BSL Level 1 Award

This course is suitable for those with little or no knowledge of British Sign Language.  Aiming to be both an introductory course for those wishing to progress through the current approved levels, or for those wishing to learn BSL ‘for fun’.  The course covers British Sign Language at a foundation level to enable simple communication with Deaf/Hard of Hearing sign language users, in basic situations.

Course objectives

  • To be able to understand and sign simple information on a range of topics.
  • To gain a basic understanding of the Deaf community.
  • To gain some simple D/deaf awareness.
  • To achieve the BSL Level 1 qualification.
  • Option to progress to Level 2 (on successful completion of Level 1)

Summary of Course Content

  • Fingerspelling; alphabet, names and places etc.
  • Numbers; dates and ages etc.
  • Simple Vocabulary; days of the week, family members, animals, food etc.
  • Basic Questions: asking and responding to greetings, well-being, directions etc.
  • Basic Receptive Skills; use of videos and in-class peer learning.
  • Basic Deaf Awareness; on meeting and socialising with D/deaf people and learning about the Deaf community.
  • Basic Study Skills: Use of pictures / on-line resources to support learning.  
     

NOTE: If you are interested in learning British Sign Language for a specific area of work, the Level 1 award can also cover British Sign Language vocabulary for:

  • Frontline Staff; simple vocabulary and basic phrases useful in customer focussed occupations; Paramedics, Shop Floor Assistants, Customer Service, Social Work and Transport staff etc.
  • Healthcare Professionals; basic phrases important in emergency/healthcare situations, and simple medical terms.
  • Young people; basic communication in youth settings, such as at youth clubs, or Deaf Clubs for young people.
